NCOWS January 2024 Match Report

The South Carolina Old West Shootists (SCOWS) recently shot its first match of 2024, when it held its regularly scheduled monthly “2nd Sunday” match for the month of January on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2023, in the Cooper Pistol Bays at the Mid-Carolina Rifle Club.

A total of 12 participants (including 1 junior and 1 female) in 9 different shooting categories braved a cold morning to get a full 5 stage (4 regular & 1 bonus) match in the books. Shooting categories included Sodbuster (2 gun – 1 pistol/1 shotgun), Working Cowboy (2 gun – 1 pistol/1 rifle), 4 Gun Black Powder Duelist, 4 Gun Smokeless Shootist, 4 Gun Smokeless Double Duelist Outlaw, Sherriff Pistoleer (Black Powder) (2 gun – 2 pistol [percussion]), Lady 3 Gun Smokeless Shootist (2 pistol/1 rifle), Homesteader (2 gun – 1 rifle/1 shotgun), and Black Powder Lawman Shootist (1 pistol/1 rifle/1 shotgun).

There was 1 clean shooter for the match: Congrats to SGT Henry!

Congratulations to all, and thanks to everyone for a great match.

The next SCOWS match will be our February “2nd Sunday” Match in Sunday, Feb. 11, 2024. Another 5 stage match (4 main stages + a bonus) is in the works. Hope to see you there!

The annual Battle of Aiken reenactment (run by the same folks who put on the Aiken Wild West Festival) will be held the weekend of Feb. 23, 24 & 25, 2024. The location will be the Battle of Aiken site at 1210 Powell Pond Rd., Aiken, SC 29801. This is a large, well-publicized event which usually draws hundreds of Civil War reenactors (including cavalry & artillery) and thousands of spectators. SCOWS usually has a prominent presence at this event, and all posse members and friends are encouraged to attend. Once again, we have been asked to serve as Provost Marshals for the event, and will be patrolling, interacting with the crowd, and helping to keep everyone safe. Our posse also typically sets up a display table and gun rack to explain to the public what it is we do and to recruit new members. Hope to see you there!
